Congratulations!
You’ve taken an important step forward, but before you can land the job, you must ace the interview.
It’s no secret that interviewing for a new position can be a daunting experience, but there are several steps you can take to prepare yourself. The more time you take to get ready for your interview, the more relaxed, comfortable and prepared you’ll be when it’s time to make a great first impression.
Here’s what you need to know.
First off, make sure you read the job description of the role you’re applying for. If you already received an invitation to interview, this means that your potential employer thinks you could have what it takes to be a part of the team, but you still need to understand exactly what you’re walking into. Many interview questions will be job-specific, which means you need to be ready to showcase your understanding of your field.
Many interviewees stumble during interviews because they glanced at the job description but didn’t read it closely. Ask yourself if you really understand what the job entails and what the potential employer is looking for. Of course, if you’re confused about certain aspects of the job, the best thing you can do is ask for clarification.
Second, practice ahead of time. It’s natural to be nervous about public speaking or interviewing in general. In fact, according to GlobeNewswire, as many as 92% of adults feel stressed about interviewing. One of the best ways to overcome any anxiety you may be feeling is to walk through typical interview-style questions with a friend or classmate you trust. The more you practice, the more comfortable you’ll be answering personal questions and verbalizing your work experience.
In addition to learning how to articulate your work experience, be sure to practice brevity. While there’s nothing wrong with giving a thorough answer, it’s important to understand how to state your experiences succinctly, as well. An interview is your opportunity to highlight your qualifications, but you don’t want to bore your interviewers with long-winded answers.
Finally, be sure to talk with our student services team or your major professor for additional guidance. One of our strategic values is being learner focused.
