Let’s get real: college is tough.

Whether you’re completing your undergraduate degree, working on a certificate or diving into a master’s degree, balancing college with work and family commitments can be overwhelming for anyone.

Focusing on your mental health while you’re pursuing your education is important, but maybe you’re looking for some practical ways you can feel more connected and supported while you’re studying at K-State Olathe.

Here are three ways you can find community and get the support you need to have the best college experience possible.

1. Reach out to your student success coach

K-State Olathe’s student success coaches want to see you succeed. From first inquiry until graduation, they’re going to be by your side to support and guide you throughout your academic career. Whether you’re wondering about on-campus events that might benefit you or looking for local resources you can use, contact your student success coach to ask questions and get connected.

"It is truly rewarding to get the opportunity to help students thrive,” said Brett Bachelor, student success coach. “My goal is to empower students to overcome hurdles and reach their highest potential.”

Whether you want study tips, ideas for how to plan your academic journey or you just want some support, don’t be afraid to reach out to your student success coach for guidance.

2. Apply for the mentorship program

We understand that you have a lot going on, but that finding support is essential to your success. That’s why we offer a mentorship program where you can connect with industry professionals in your field who can offer you tips, advice and support as you navigate your academic career and beyond.

Mentorship looks different for everyone, but your mentor can help you:

  • Identify job opportunities
  • Map the next steps in your career
  • Practice interviewing
  • Provide perspective on industry trends
  • Review your resume
  • Work on improving your communication skills

3. Participate as much as possible

Did you know that our student services team offers on-campus events where you can connect with your classmates, professors and student success coaches? Attending events where you have the chance to participate in face-to-face communication and conversation can do more than just give you a fun way to spend an evening — it can also improve your feelings of community and support. Your student success coaches, professors and classmates all want you to succeed during your time as a student, so make sure you get as involved as possible.

In addition to student-focused events, such as our Student Appreciation Night, K-State Olathe offers professional development opportunities. Whether you want to attend a lunchtime webinar, an afternoon seminar or even a conference, professional development programming enables you to get connected while learning something new.
