If you’ve been thinking about pursuing your personal financial planning degree, it’s important to know that you have a wide variety of career options available to you.

The K-State Olathe B.S. in Personal Financial Planning is a CFP® Board Registered Program designed for those seeking a career in helping others achieve their financial and personal goals. With a focus on holistic financial planning and the role of family in financial decisions, this bachelor's completion degree prepares you to excel in the in-demand financial planning profession. Demand in the industry is booming, with an estimated 100,000 positions to fill by 2034, according to consulting firm McKinsey and Co.

But what kinds of roles can you get with this degree?

Marketing Intern

One position you can pursue is a marketing intern at a wealth management firm. Many firms recognize the need to build a digital presence to market their firms to new clients but lack the in-house talent to develop this.

Did you know it’s difficult for professionals with a non-financial background to market these services?

Some students are earning a PFP degree coupled with a focus in sales and marketing so they can become more attractive to potential employers who need a team with these skills.

As a marketing intern, you may be able to assist with creating and developing marketing plans, developing branding and providing support in advertising at a wealth management firm.

Data Analyst

Another potential option is to become a data analyst

Many firms are looking for graduates who may not like to necessarily be in client meetings but want people who want to work with client data, develop reports and organize firm information.

This type of role is great if you love working with numbers and information, and if you want to make a difference in a technical way.

Data analysts are detail-oriented people who enjoy working with detailed information and analytics, and who are comfortable providing insight and guidance into how a wealth management firm can best leverage that information.

Personal Financial Planner

Of course, if you have a head for business and a heart for people, you might choose to become a personal financial planner and work directly with clients who need guidance, support and encouragement when it comes to wealth planning and management.

If you’re thinking about pursuing a career in personal financial planning, it’s important to understand exactly why people choose to work with personal financial planners — and how you can help them make healthy financial choices. People come to personal financial planners for estate planning, retirement planning and everything in-between.

Although some clients may visit with a planner just once or twice to complete a specific task, many personal financial planners build long-term relationships with their clients, which means you will have the chance to work with clients at different stages in their financial lives.
