Launching your new year right: Five ways to set yourself up for success

A new year carries the perfect opportunity to set fresh goals and plan new adventures.

Fortunately, no matter what you are hoping to accomplish this year, you can take several steps to make sure you’re set up for success in 2024.

What do you need to know?

1. Be thoughtful in your goal setting

When you are setting goals, it is important to make sure that you choose to strive for things that help you on a personal, professional or academic level. Another tip? Be specific. The more precise and specific your goals are, the more likely you are to reach them. “Get good grades” is a much broader goal, for example, than setting a specific GPA you would like to end the semester with or choosing a new skill you’d like to learn.

2. Surround yourself with people who support you

It’s no secret that surrounding yourself with positivity can boost your morale. When it comes to launching 2024 on a good note, make sure you surround yourself with people who support you and want to see you succeed. One of the first places you can start is with our student services team. Each of our student success coaches wants to help you plan for success this year, so don’t hesitate to reach out. We also offer an industry mentorship program on campus so we can help you get connected with professionals in your field who can provide you with insight, ideas and guidance.

3. Create a schedule

One of the best ways to set yourself up for success is to create a schedule. While the idea of scheduling your life may sound frustrating, the reality is that schedules and lists can help you stay organized, complete tasks and move toward completing your goals. Oregon State University has a helpful set of tips for creating schedules that includes incorporating breaks, giving yourself extra time and of course, calculating how much study time you need to be successful in your classes.

4. Focus on your professional development

It is never too early to start planning for professional success. This includes attending professional development workshops, seminars, webinars and conferences that are in your field. At K-State Olathe, we believe in providing as many opportunities for professional development as possible, so launch your year with one of our professional development workshops. We offer programming that is designed to meet your goals and match your schedule. Whether you’re looking for a lunchtime webinar or a multi-day conference, we have you covered.

5. Take time for yourself

Of course, one of the most important steps you can take this year is self-care. One of the biggest mistakes learners make when setting goals for the year is to neglect “me” time. No matter what you’re studying or what your personal time commitments are, make sure that you make an effort to focus on your mental health and wellbeing this year so you can be the best version of you.
