Whether you’ve always dreamed of seeing the world or the idea of traveling is new to you, studying abroad provides a unique opportunity that enables you to visit new places while learning more about yourself and the world around you.

For Kansas State University Olathe students, there’s never been a better time to get started.

Studying in a new place enables you to grow not only as a student, but as a person. You’ll return home with new experiences, new adventures and of course, new perspectives.

“It’s our goal that each student who joins our study abroad program returns home with a deeper understanding of community and culture,” said Haley Larson, Ph.D.

K-State Olathe is offering a chance to study abroad in England in 2024 with three of our faculty members. Learners will be given the opportunity to study animal health in a new culture while experiencing local traditions, attractions and community events.

If you’re wondering whether studying in England is right for you, here are just a few of the benefits you'll enjoy when you study abroad.

Experience a new culture

One of the biggest reasons to study abroad is that you’ll have the chance to experience a new culture and community. This means you’ll have the opportunity to learn new traditions, hear new music and of course, become immersed in the local atmosphere.

“Our students will have multiple opportunities to experience the local culture during this trip,” said Paige Adams, D.V.M., Ph.D. “In addition to touring London, learners will also visit local farms and have an opportunity to learn firsthand about animal health in a new community. This will help prepare them for their future careers in animal health.”

Try new things

Another benefit of studying abroad is that you’ll have the chance to try new things and have new experiences you might not have planned for. Traveling abroad means you’ll get to try new foods, explore new places and meet new people. Maybe you’ve never had a full English breakfast or perhaps the idea of eating Yorkshire pudding is something you’ve never considered. Traveling abroad means you’ll have the chance to experience these new things and more.

“Each of our students is unique and has a story to tell,” said Rebekkah Stuteville, Ph.D. “This class provides a new chapter in that story. Learners will have the chance to experience things they may not have tried before or may not have even known existed. These experiences build on one another to help our students become stronger critical thinkers.”

Get out of your comfort zone

It’s no secret that traveling to a new place can help push you out of your comfort zone. Especially if you’ve lived in one place for most of your life, traveling somewhere you haven’t been means you’ll be faced with new challenges like learning about local transportation and finding new places to eat. You might spend time in a place where you don’t speak the language or you might find that your expectations for your trip change and you have to be flexible.

Make new friends

Of course, one of the biggest perks to studying abroad and traveling somewhere new is that you’ll have the opportunity to make new friends. You might connect with students from other universities, local students or even residents in the area where you’re spending time.

Earn degree credit

If you’re still trying to decide whether studying abroad is right for you, make sure you remember that you can earn credit toward your degree when you choose to enroll in a study abroad program through your university. Here at K-State Olathe, we know how important it is to move forward with your degree while you have a chance to travel, which is why we’re offering a study abroad class you’re going to love.

Students interested in animal health can apply now through the Education Abroad Office. This course is being held in 2024 and will provide students with a variety of incredible opportunities. Each student will have the chance to:

  • Visit farms and veterinary practices
  • Explore a museum dedicated to James Herriot’s life
