If you’re looking for ways to become a stronger leader, it’s important to identify specific areas you can improve. A strong leader will make a difference in the quality and productivity of the team, whether or not you are in a manager role.

Looking for opportunities to step up your leadership game and start guiding others?

Here are three skills you need to start developing.

1. How to communicate effectively

If you want to be a leader in your role, you must start by communicating efficiently and effectively. Clear communication enables you to set boundaries, share expectations and set goals with your team. Whether you’re currently in a leadership role or you plan to be one day, focusing on developing the way you express yourself through email, workplace messaging apps and in-person meetings is an essential part of growth.

During our K-State Olathe Leadership Series, an event offered each spring, participants spend time refining their communication abilities. This series provides a space where you can practice communicating effectively with others, whether you’re dealing with conflict or working together on a project.

2. How to solve problems

Problem-solving is an essential part of any role; however, it is even more important if you want to be someone your team turns to for guidance. Strong leaders understand they may encounter problems they aren’t ready for, so learning how to identify issues, strategize solutions and work with your team to respond are vital skills.

Our Leadership Series offers multiple sessions teaching you how to strengthen a variety of professional skills, including one on how to strategize. If you’re working in the advanced manufacturing space and wanting to strengthen your leadership abilities, we offer a session on leading with data and setting strategic goals to help solve problems and enhance your team’s performance.

3. How to delegate

When you’re in a leadership role, learning how to let go and delegate tasks is an essential part of managing your time. While you may be tempted to take charge and complete every task you’re able to, chances are this is an inefficient use of your work hours. Instead, learn how you can delegate tasks to your team members and, more importantly, learn how you can support to them through delegation so that they can be successful.

One of the best ways you can learn to delegate efficiently is through giving and receiving feedback from your team. Did you know that feedback, when given appropriately, can greatly strengthen your team’s communication and productivity? Giving and receiving feedback also helps you manage workloads, which means you’ll be able to make informed decisions when delegating tasks. More importantly, good feedback can support your team members and guide them as they grow and develop their own careers.
